Fully equipped press hardening line including adjusted tool geometry has installed at Fraunhofer IWU to provide basic geometry for industrial testing of 3MA-sensor. Basic lab tests have shown an acceptable difference between standard HV-measuring and not destructive measuring by 3MA. Correct handling of sensor is still under investigation.
On the other hand, Eurecat have worked in the development and optimization of a technology based on advanced thermography for in-situ detection of defects in sheet metal forming processes. The initial tests performed in a modified stamping die were not successful because of the difficulty of obtaining specimens with a single strain localization. Then, a Nakajima tool were selected to continue with the study. In the first trials, strain localization previous to fracture were detected by thermal camera. The thermal gradient varied in function of the degree of strain localization. Additional tests will be performed to determine the time until the thermal gradient in necking zone disappears, the magnitude of this gradient in other materials and the effect of the sheet coating.
